what have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

During the construction of my media product my understanding of media technologies has broadened greatly due to using new software and equipment as well as developing my knowledge of media equipment I’m already familiar with.

The editing software I used was adobe premiere which I have had previous experience with in GCSE when we had to complete a similar task for our coursework. However I have greatly increased my knowledge and understanding of the software during this task. Beforehand I didn’t know how to do many things on the software but now I know how to edit a piece of film independently both correctly and efficiently. For example I now know how to create a camera flare using video effects found in adobe premiere and making it more realistic by cross dissolving two shots to make the flare change size and position. I also learnt how to edit a shot to white to enhance the transition between the knife and flashback shots which has given me more confidence to try something new next time.

The camera we used to record the piece was the Canon DSLR which was a different camera to the one I had used in the past so therefore I wasn’t familiar with it; however I did learn how to use it quickly as it was similar. The main problem we experienced was that we didn’t know how to adjust the lighting of the camera, which was too bright so delayed the filming for a while but was eventually sorted out when we found the options on the camera. Apart from that we didn’t really run into any problems and the filming was fairly quick and easy. This has also made me feel more confident with trying out different cameras and new technologies.

I developed my camera skills during the filming of our product because during the test shots I practised panning and focusing I was able to use in the final production so I was able to see the journey from development to completion.

One thing that I was really proud of was the title sequence that my group produced where we filmed a car journey just around the local area and added fast paced music to it and displayed titles during it. The increased speed of the shot created a more erratic effect which added to the suspense of what was to follow was done by increasing the pace of the shot by 10 times using the editing software. This was something that the rest of the class found really effective as we got lots of good feedback on it and they seemed to enjoy it. Also the non-diegetic sound used in the title sequence was very fast paced and energetic so worked really well with the shot. I researched into a lot of title sequences of thrillers and noticed that not many of them incorporate a fast paced soundtrack in the title sequence compared to tenser and slower paced soundtracks. This is why we used a fast paced soundtrack to create a counter stereotype of generic thriller title sequence.

To finish off, I have found that whilst my knowledge of technologies was, I thought good, I have still been able to experiment and challenge myself with different ideas. Workings with new members of a group have allowed me to develop my creativity skills and my vision for planning and producing final pieces. I hope to build on this moving forward into A2.
