IDent analyses

Twisted Pictures is an American independent film production company, mainly creating films of the horror and thriller genre. They are best known for producing the saw film series.

TWISTED PICTURES

The ident for twisted pictures is very unique, intimidating and clearly lets the audience know that the film they are going to be viewing will likely be scary. It starts off with "twisted pictures" in white text with a black background, then barbed wire starts to wrap its self around the text. The barbed wire gives the audience an indication of danger before the film has even started and lets the audience know that the following film is likely to be violent and scary/gory.

Next a nail forcefully comes down between the two words then the barbed wire wraps itself around this as well. This could represent the fact that the production company is sort of "wrapping" itself around their viewers by catching their attention and producing films that keep the audience indulged and alert. When the barbed wire has finished wrapping around the nail, lightning strikes the nail and cause it so spin which unwraps it from the barbed wire and causes the barbed wire to disperse from the text and nail. Then we are just left with a nail with a small amount of barbed wire on it in the middle of the now barbed wire free text.

Many things in this ident act as warnings to the audience; the barbed wire, nail and lightning are all things that can be harmful to humans. This ident from start to finish is filled with danger and makes the audience aware of what type of film they will be watching (thriller/horror).

HAMMER FILMS

Hammer Film Productions is a British film production company based in London. Founded in 1934, the company is best known for a series of Gothic Horror films made from the mid-1950s until the 1970s. Hammer also produced science fiction, thrillers and comedies.

The ident starts with the word "HAMMER" filled with characters from previous hammer film productions such as Frankenstein and Dracula which are both recognisable and distinguished charters. The characters also include a screaming woman which indicates to the audience that they produce films that can be frightening or potentially violent.

The characters then fade away and the text is an intense red and the text is bold which can an act as a warning to the audience warning them about the potential distressing things may see in the film they are about to watch. You also get a sense of danger from the text due to its size, colour, font and the fact that it is bold, this also may act as a warning to the audience to prepare them and so they know what sort of film they are about to watch.

LIONSGATE

Lionsgate are one of the biggest film production companies in the world and have made hundreds of films from many different genres. Almost everyone who watches films regualarly knows of Lionsgate due to how successful they are.

The ident begins with the very recognisable Lionsgate music in a low key and then rises to a very high key which builds up tension for the film as they are showing bolts moving around through a key whole which is also a tension builder because after the big door opens the lighting goes really bright like you are entering some other world when watching their movies. The music is very identifiable because Lionsgate are such a successful production company and the soundtrack is heard so commonly by people who watch films quite often.

After this you see the company name floating in the clouds, depending on what type of film it is the colour of the background is different. For family films or comedies it is a blue colour but for horror films or thrillers it is a dark, sinister red. This ident informs the audience immediately that the following film is going to be scary or could be too much for younger audiences, it acts as a sort of warning to the viewers.

The production company's name has the word lion in it, lions are seen as ferocious, violent animals who can be unpredictable and scary. This could act as a sort of metaphor for the production company meaning that their film is going to be unpredictable and ferocious- which will appeal to many people. This is a contributing factor to why Lionsgate are so successful and established due to their wide range of audiences that they are capable of pleasing and entertaining.

BLUMHOUSE

Blumhouse Productions is a multi-media production company that has pioneered a new model of studio filmmaking- producing high-quality micro-budget films for wide release. Since its launch, Blumhouse has produced the highly profitable Paranormal Activity and The purge series.

Blumhouse’s ident is intentionally scary and intimidating and definitely has a lasting effect on anyone who views it. It begins with someone breathing at a high volume which creates a spooky atmosphere, it’s filmed in a dark room with furniture floating in the air which could relate to the horror and thriller films they produce. You then see a young girl who looks isolated and is staring into the camera, it creates such a huge unexpected build up to a film and it’s very misleading as you could believe this is the beginning of the actual film. The camera then rapidly moves and focus’s on the wall where Blumhouse productions is shown. It end’s with nothing but silence which leaves the audience nothing but their own thoughts which in itself is scary.

All these factors they have used to create this ident shows that this production company before even researching it that there main genres are thrillers and horror and wants to create an enigma to what the film will be like. if the ident is this thrilling, the audience will hope for the same experience and techniques throughout the movie their watching which is why it is a great ident for a thriller movie.
